Looking for a movie title of the 80s?

Two children boy and girl. Chico has a small action figure that comes to life played by well-known (can not remember his name). More like a father figure to him. He has something that the elderly couple wants. They were in San Antonio for some of the film. I remember them being in the Alamo and going from the old. One of the elders had a finger missing, perhaps the lady. Finally, in a plane friend and the boys action figure takes the plane down the runway, the child leaves the plane and the plane explodes. The action figure comes out of the fire and I think it ends up being his father or something. Anyway, I know that probably sounds a bit scater brain. Can you help one?
