Has Canon Got Another Digital Camera Class Action Lawsuit on The Horizon?

The idea of manufacturer defects is a fascinating one. Should makers of the product be held responsible for any and all problems for a device after it's been sold to customers and a wide-reaching defect has been found? If the defect is minor, and has small influence on the operation of the product should they be compelled to mend it? Who decides if a flaw is indeed 'minor ' and how if the entire process best be handled?

There are a few examples today of mass produced digital cameras that have well-known defects, but the manufacturers' employees when asked about the problem will state they have never heard of it before. All of the major camera manufacturers are guilty of this, so it looks to be the policy of each company to deny awareness of a problem unless compelled to do so legally.

When a big problem appears with a product, and the maker knows the problem, they should fix it. That does make sense. As an example, it is reported that the Ford Motor Company decided it might be less expensive in the long run to NOT recall the "Pinto" model vehicles that had a heavy rate of catching aflame and exploding when in certain accidents due to poor design. Instead of fixing the problem before there was accidental, they made a decision it would be less expensive to settle suits against them for injuries and deaths caused by the design instead. Clearly in this case, the maker should have corrected the vehicle before there was any injury or deaths in the 1st place.

When it comes to smaller consumer electronics, when is it worthwhile to take the company to court and attempt to force them to mend the product? For instance, the Canon SD790 side screws almost always vibrate themselves loose and fall out of the camera. This will cause the side trim of the camera body including the handstrap itself to fall off, leaving a large gaping hole in the side of the camera for dirt and debris to enter simply.

The screws should be secured with something such as "Locktite", and can be acquired online for approximately $7 including shipping for a pair. In this example should the manufacturer pay each buyer of this camera $7 or send them a pair of screws and some "Locktite" to secure them? We both know that the only way that would happen is if they were legally forced to do so. The difficulty is, a legal case will take a long time to settle, and the sole people who actually benefit from it are the barristers, and no one else.

A lawyer in a case like this, representing tens of thousands of buyerss, could stand to earn a hundred thousand dollars or even more for their time, while the patron sees just $7 each. Is this fair? Is this justice? The case could take years to settle, and meanwhile all you want is a screw repair kit for your Canon SD790!

Another defect now beginning to show up lately is the fact that the Canon Powershot G9 camera also has screws that loosen and disappear over time! These days there are many unhappy Canon customers searching for Canon Powershot G9 screws as well! When will it end?

A more honorable thing for the manufacturer to do would be to own up to the problem and offer a solution for either a very minimum cost to the consumer or no charge at all . This may go a ways to extend buyer confidence in the manufacturer as well as keeping that client trustworthy to the brand thereby making the cash back through future purchase. Sadly it appears as though established companies could be too worried about today to consider the future.
