Doing It Right: Packing Furniture For International Removals

Moving to another nation? For international removals, you need to pack your property properly, most particularly your precious furniture. To avoid damage during lifting, moving, and transiting, follow these practical tips.

First, if the furniture is modular, disassemble it. Disassembly makes packing easier, makes the load lighter, and diminishes the risk of damage during transit. When disassembling, remember to bind all components together; tape table legs together, place screws and bolts in a single transparent zipper lock bag, and so on. Put a label with the name of the furniture. By doing this, you won't have any hassles in identifying which belongs to what when reassembling the furniture when it arrives in your new home.

Second, wrap the furniture (and its parts if disassembled) with cushioning material. There are several cushioning materials available in the market; bubble wrap is one of the most common ones. Ensure the wrap goes all around the furniture. Even better, wrap the piece with two or three layers of bubble wrap.

Third, for international removals, place the furniture inside a packing box, which is often constructed out of reinforced corrugated cardboard. Ensure that there is an inch or two of space between the furniture and the sides of the box. Fill those spaces with crumpled newspapers, pads, peanut foam, blankets, or pillows for extra cushioning.

For massive furniture pieces that cannot be disassembled or packed such as cupboards, display cabinets, and wardrobes, put moving pads at the bottom of the legs. These pads prevent the furniture from getting damaged and lessen the stress on the framework when you or the international removal staff carry or move it to the truck. It is also a good idea to wrap the legs and corners of the furniture with pads.

Lastly, once all your things are in the container truck, it would be a good idea to sign a contract a pest control company to fumigate the container. Fumigation prevents insects from attacking the wood of the furniture.
