I read somewhere that the Great Dane is referred to as the "king of dogs". They are indeed extremely large dog breed, that's why. But when I came across an article that says Great Dane is also called the "gentle giant", I began to wonder why.
Well, they got that nickname a LONG time ago, but they totally deserve it. They are one of the gentlest breeds and they are the 2nd tallest. They used to be bred as vicious boar-hounds, but then the boar hunting sport disappeared in Germany, and breeders bred them to be gentle, but couldn't make them smaller.
It's just their nickname, it stuck with them and it's there to stay.
