Devil Comics Entertainment: Kick Ass (2010) Movie Review
Overall Kick Ass is a mediocre comic book adaptation that fails in one major area – writing. Compared to the comic book, which is a fantastic read and available at fine comic book specialty shops everywhere, the movie suffers from Hollywood's laziness of putting a real film together. However the acting and directing is superb.
The Actors
Aaron Johnson is terrific playing the character of Kick Ass. His character is clearly fleshed out thanks to comic book writer Mark Millar.
Chloe Moretz is just perfect and really saves the film. She really made her character believable and gave it some depth.
Nicolas Cage gives one of his best performances I can remember. It's wonderful seeing him as a father figure because it really brings out multiple strengths as an actor. Instead of his one-dimensional action roles that Hollywood places him in.
Mark Strong fresh off of his stint in Sherlock Holmes plays a villain that never really has a chance to be fleshed out within the movie. Hopefully his next comic book character playing Sinestro in the Green Lantern film will play on the actor's strengths.
The Director
Director Matthew Vaughn (Layer) brings to life the second comic book adaptation of Mark Millar. He co-wrote the film with Jane Goldman. It is usually difficult to adapt a comic book to film and requires extra care. On a personal note Matthew Vaughn is married to lovely Claudia Schiffer.
Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake) brings the second Mark Millar comic book adaptation to life. Kick Ass was originally an 8 issue comic book mini series that explores a world where ordinary people decide to don costumes and become superhero vigilantes.
The first comic book adaptation was Wanted (2008) brought to life by Timur Bekmambetov starring James McAvoy and Angelina Jolie.
