Barbie For Kids .... Why not?
I still remember fondly my childhood. Years spent playing with my dolls and various accessories. The creation of imaginary world of glamor and adventure. My wrists were an outlet, as for most girls the opportunity to forage in the social field proverbial security blanket. A 12 "blond hair perfectly proportioned pieces of perfection. Flocks of girls flock together with their representations of themselves in trailer. These dolls provided an opportunity to socialize and play in a group setting.
I never gave much importance to the boys. Until I was a little boy the other day asked for a doll. I always thought that children were busy with their trucks and action figures, etc. As the progressive thinker who I am and know as an educator that all children play with dolls as a form of dramatic expression, I said "yes." My husband reluctantly agreed to their demands, but only if the verbiage was changed to "action figures".
Armed with his approval, I searched the internet for 'dummies Children. "To my regret, there was virtually all dolls and articles discussing the fear of playing with dolls as a sign of homosexuality. I tried a number of different phrases as "action figures", "Ken doll" and sporting heroes. I even tried "dolls of articulation, "hoping to make the team understands that criticism I wanted a Barbie doll, but it was a man. My search led me to collection, movie icons, and figures are over $ 50.
What happened to the toys of yesterday? They were a couple of dollars and the children were by the dozen. Instead of taking a toy, I discovered a new injury, anti-man. This is, of course, ironic because I am a feminist and applauded the line of Barbies that allowed him to "be anything" and "doing nothing". However, in our quest to show our strength and beauty girls and give them lots of confidence, we canceled our male counterparts? This is evident from the meager selection of 'toys'. The representation ranges of males feminized "Toy Boy" Ken has become a physicist steroids.
Sexual connotations abound in costume Ken to his lack of occupation. Ken doll now comes equipped with little more than a surfboard and flip flops. He drives a pink car and a child of the lines the wrist is called "Hottie" Ken. Need I say more? How ironic that feminists who took up arms in the realistic representation of the figure Barbie are allowing our male counterparts to be perceived as a vague aspirations effeminate fashion and only the beach. A nephew of mine 15 years, Ken snapped one of the Barbie accessories. How clever of the teenager who recognize that all appearances, Kennedy was treated the same as one of the bags or Barbie shoes.
For the other extreme are grotesquely muscled "action figures" that are more like figures and resemble aliens or monsters. They are icons of heroes or movie rescue heroes etc ... and not one in the least resemble any man I know. This does not mean that thousands of children delight in their fight against the mockery and dramatic play good against evil but my son is only 4 and does not refer to representations on the movie screen. He nods in recognition at the mention of Batman and the like, but is not interested in that kind of game ... not yet.
Where are toys of yesteryear? I clearly remember the cowboys with horses brown (not bright purple My Little Pony), Indians, astronauts and the Lone Ranger. Why Ken did not come with a basketball or a briefcase, go mountain climbing or biking. Being a construction worker, a stockbroker or anything to chef or unit that is not pink?
In short: Have we gone so far the other direction that we have forgotten the male perspective?
If I am in error, please find me the site or store I can buy a male doing physical / dress and act like a normal guy so I can buy for my son your wrist. Meanwhile I'm still looking ....
