Cost Of Libya War Projected At $1 Billion-for Now

Protection Libyans from Gadhafi was deemed expensive at the start and on the fifth day of bombing appear even more so. The U.S. military budget is being drained by two wars. At least another $1 billion can be spent on the Libyan intervention distraction. The expense of the Libya war is being paid for, for now, by the current military budget, however turmoil lasting longer than projected might require the Pentagon to submit a funding request to a Congress bent on cutting costs.

Establishing a Libya no-fly zone costs were projected by the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments. The costs were between $500 million and $1 billion. In the report, it also said $400 million to $800 million would be needed for the missiles and bombs needed to neutralize Gadhafi’s air defense. Enforcing a no-fly zone after that could expense between $30 million and $100 million a week, primarily in fuel. Now, the coalition has decided to start targeting ground forces on Libya’s coastline since Gadhafi is attempting to fight rebels nevertheless changing the costs.

How the Libya war numbers work

On its first day, costs for Operation Odyssey Dawn passed $100 million just in cruise missiles. By the fourth day, the U.N. coalition had launched at least 162 Tomahawk missiles priced between $1 million to $1.5 million each. About $10,000 an hour is put into three B-2 stealth bombers flying on 25-hour round trip flights from Missouri. They're to deliver 45 $40,000 Joint Direct Attack Munitions bombs that weight about 2,000 pounds. An air tanker support is needed to fly with the B-2 stealth bombers for support while pilots get combat pay for it. About $10,000 an hour is needed for a full contingent of U.S. fighter jets to be flown. Also, about $75 million was needed to replace the jet that crashed on its way. There are 2 amphibious assault ships, three submarines and two destroyers as part of the 11 United States Navy vessels there also. They are there to support the mission by floating off the coast of Libya.

Possibility the Defense Department will need more money

The Pentagon has not issued official cost estimate for Libyan intervention. How much it will expense is unknown until the length and scope-as well as the United States role in Operation Odyssey Dawn - becomes clear. Several of the analysts suggest the United States could be helping out for a week with the budget that exists. This covers the emergency action that is taking place. The Defense Department may need to ask for more money for the Libyan intervention from Congress though because of the mission when the Pentagon has already been asked to cut its budget, many Capitol Hill critics suggest.
