I'd like to make a toy model or a action figure, what kind of clay do these artist use? pls help?

If you see those like spawn figures or superman or marvel toy figures, they all started with a clay model, it looks white or something like ivory color, what kind of clay is that? and do they get hard or do they bake it? need answers pls?

Also can use Plasticine, Sculpey, Fimo or Cernit clays, which are polyvinylchloride clays that harden when baked at LOW temps.

These PVC clays come in small bricks or logs and its pretty safe is you follow the directions exactly.

It becomes very soft and pliable when worked with the fingers or run thru a pasta machine, but hardensand keeps its shape well, when baked. You can find this stuff at Joann fabrics & Michaels craft stores, Hobby Lobby stores and Walmart. Some hobby and train stores and most artist supply shops will have it.

I have occasionally seen them use a paper or cellulose clay that air dries rock-hard, for paintable display figures.

This type of paper clay is used for filling push molds or hinged molds and can be trimmed or carved with standard clay tools, which you can find at most hobby and craft stores. And there is very little shrinkage as it hardens. It is much harder than plaster and the like and it can also be shaped by hand, not just used in molds. It can be painted, varnished, drilled, sanded or left as is.

There is one type of FIMO or SCULPEY that hardens and looks like ceramic or porcelain and another type which, when baked, fires off the clay and leaves the metal impregnating it behind. So you can make metallic sculptures and figures (and jewelry), by starting with simple clay.

Another type of clay that these makers have out remains softer and flexible, like Gumby, if you know who that character is, or like stretchy rubber.
