Letting Go Of What's Not Important

The world as we know it is in a constant state of flux. Humans, by their very nature, do not adapt well to such flux and it shows in many different ways, especially when some life altering event occurs. Letting go of what's not important, though, is vital if one hopes to do well as one moves through life and all that it can present in terms of challenges.

In general, most therapists and mental health professionals will say that it's when something serious happens in a person's life -- such as the death of a loved one or the birth of a child and the like -- that people begin to loose sight of the important elements in life. These challenges can be difficult, and people might begin to focus on collecting 'things' rather than what's really important.

For example, getting a new dry wet vacuum may seem, at first glance, to be very important but really; how vital is getting such a vacuum in the grand scheme of things? Well, it might be if the home has been flooded or inundated by severe rainfall but there probably aren't too many other reasons to become so fixated on getting what is really just an appliance.

This is why many therapists and mental health experts recommend that people learn how to 'let go' of certain things. Comparing the necessity of getting something like a matching pair of home space heaters just to provide extra-toasty warmth to a family rec room to the need to live life as fully as one can really isn't a contest; choose life every time.

Unfortunately, many people get caught up in a cycle of accumulation. What this means is they focus endlessly on getting more and more things rather than accumulating more and more love and respect and companionship. And thinking that one can buy love by constantly buying people things such as a brand-new anodized cookware set will please on one level but will be empty on all the important levels.

That's why it's important to take stock of the things in life that really matter. This can be a great opportunity for most people to realize that it is actually the amorphous that can account for more. This means things like friendship and family and simple companionship. Just look at all of the books and self-help guides out there to see how to get started off in the right way.

There really isn't any secret to figuring out what to let go of and what to hold onto, in the end. All that's needed, really, is to understand what is based on desire and what is based on longing. Most humans long for affection and companionship just as they desire cool toys and the like. Think about what is actually the more long-lasting, though.
