CNN's War on modern slavery, a noble failure or Self Promotion?
During the last month or so CNN has been in a campaign trying to eradicate what it sees as "modern slavery" in what have come to call a war. This is very similar to what the Bush administration began in the 80's when he declared war on drugs. That is George Bush, who was convinced he could win a war against drug traffickers and all medications, to that, or it could be outside the United States or at least have their numbers reduced. Of course, the United States with its vast resources the opportunity to go to drug traffickers and even have several of them arrested and let tons of drugs entering the United States. This so-called war against drugs, including the capture of among his many trophies of the former President of Panama, Manuel Noriega, who was brought back to the United States after a U.S. invasion was removed from power.
The United States is convinced that the arrest of Manuel Noriega, along with many other drug lords or whatever they are called, would in a reduction in the amount of drugs entering the United States did not. That is a case that not only did not stop drugs entering the United States, but the amount did not decrease even in the slightest. The United States quickly learning that for every kilo of cocaine confiscated was achieved in 50 years or less has for them and arrested a drug dealer and managed to convince, and perhaps another one or more held her. Naturally, being a lost battle in the U.S. was trying to cure the symptoms not the disease that was not was not too cocaine entering the United States, but demand in the United States was very high. In the absence of an overwhelming number of people who were not only willing but able to spend hundreds of dollars weeks or even a day to support his cocaine habit.
All this so the more lucrative drug trade and is worth risking a long prison sentence and that if you have captured not was not even the case of the majority. The U.S. war drugs eventually fell like a complete failure as CNN war on modern slavery. That is a case CNN is making the same mistake that U.S. did not go after the source of the problem they were trying to solve.
In the case of "modern slavery", which is basically the trafficking, child pornography, forced child labor and sweatshops, the problem goes far beyond the law and that humanity is one which can be solved. This despite all the technology today and this being the extreme poverty that makes the problems mentioned above. Being extreme poverty in some countries like Sudan, Yemen, Pakistan, Afghanistan, along with many other countries, forcing many have to resort to desperate measures to try to stay alive. Of course, and added to the extreme poverty that causes hunger not only, but malnutrition to the point of putting some of the edge of starvation, there are also civil wars and genocide that practically forces some to have to flee their homes to travel to other countries.
All of which creates a grave situation for some who will do anything to leave their own country and travel to any country, where you can find food and money they need to survive and a chance to escape the dangers back home. Naturally, the developed countries accept these people and these people have the means to reach those countries, even when they were allowed to enter with legal visas. It is this precise set of circumstances I mentioned that leads to trafficking. Because these people then voluntarily sold to traffickers just so he could at least have food to feed not only themselves but their children. These being the traffickers, who, in fact, to some extent are helping these people to escape the deprivations of their own countries.
This, of course, but the cost of losing his own freedom to these people, almost all the problems is preferable to that face in their own country. Most people in the developed world could not imagine what something is to have so few choices in life to work as a sex slave in a factory or 7 days a week, almost without pay, it is preferable to return to their home countries but to many around the world this is their everyday reality. Some of these slaves named considering life as a luxury compared to those who left their countries of origin.
From another point of view war on slavery today will be even more difficult because, to some extent, is even more difficult to determine exactly what qualifies as "Modern slavery". As it was the other day I saw on CNN that a child of ten years or so, and his brothers were being forced to work in a factory in Afghanistan in order to repay a loan his father had taken. It is not clear whether the boys were working to pay only the loan or maybe add interest the loan, however, was a case that the father of the boys had taken the loan and use labor of their children to repay the money lent which was used for medical expenses. As for the factory, to some extent, had taken a risk to lend money to someone without any collateral but Such was apparently the case, however you wonder how qualified as "modern slavery"? After all, no one forced this man to take a loan this factory, after all, lend the money I saved someone's life and just wanted to return to a legal form that does not require anyone to be sold in the prostitution, or anything like that. Naturally, one could always mention the age of the children concerned however, this is more a product of extreme poverty a nation that an issue that can only be solved by pointing the finger at a factory to pay the money and wish you paid.
There is also the case of a servant, who spent his life trying to pay not only a debt, but interest on a debt that was accumulated at a rate that was much higher the amount of money she won. This basically means that the debt was never paid and that even their children have to work to repay the loan. By Of course, all this we can also talk about how the U.S. some people are so desperate to go to college to take out loans will take several years to pay. These loans carried high interest rates means that a person just out of college to spend their first years after graduating, basically working just to pay for their education.
In all this, I do not want to understand that I am in favor of slavery today than I am in favor of ancient slavery but if you think about it carefully, one in my opinion, to conclude that this is just the byproduct of extreme poverty found in some countries. Since this is poverty, civil wars, along with hunger and violence, who are the real guilty of the aforementioned ills of society. All of which means that some form of slavery today as the sale of children, women and men, sex slaves, sweatshops, etc will always exist as long as the conditions, such as those mentioned above. Since these conditions are to be addressed first place but, again, they who are the hardest of all to remove.
In this CNN might be able to close a sweat shop here or there, or with a group of traffickers arrested here or there, but after all, this is not going to make a little difference, as long as the cause of problem is not served outside. However, this is that CNN does not have the power to stop modern slavery that makes me think that they are either very naive to think they can or perhaps just looking for a noble failure, enabling them to be seen as at least I tried. As was the case in the United States declared war on drugs, undoubtedly lost as CNN loose them in slavery.
In conclusion, I would say that if I am against slavery now day, the facts are that the weather conditions of extreme poverty with the civil wars prevail in some countries, there will always be people willing to do anything to get out of those countries. Creating a market for those who are just a few are helping these people even offering them a life that most of us never will, but those who are truly desperate, even a step forward and how to find something better.
